A Slave to the Wrong Inbox?
By Randi Smith-Todorowski
“You mean-- How am I?” My father used to quickly correct me and anyone else
who made the mistake of asking, “Where are you?” It is simply none of your
business. I do not have to report into you. My father knows Personal
freedom.
Have you become a slave to your inbox? Voicemail, email, snail mail, so
many messages come at us from every direction. It is somewhat organized
madness! With so many messages coming from the outside in, when is the last
time you checked in with your original inbox?
Earlier this week in an attempt to get a new cell phone, I was left without
any service for 12 hours. The store had to keep both overnight. My initial
fear quickly transformed into incredible Freedom! Just the day before, I
was accused of being “unresponsive” when I failed to return a text message
within 20 minutes. I had no idea, other people felt so entitled to my time.
Now I had an excuse to enjoy my own silence. I dragged the 12 hours out to
24 hours and considered waiting another day to pick up this handy ball and
chain device commonly known as a cell phone.
When I did pick it up, the amazing salesman, who personally, manually
transferred my entire address book (see the power of a kind word, if you
read my last article?) suggested I get the one with the walkie-talkie
feature, I so I can be instantly accessed. Are you kidding? Let me
understand this correctly, people actually pay money to give the world
permission to interrupt them at any time? If that is the Information Age, I
am staying in the Inspiration Age. Have you ever noticed that your best
ideas come to you when you have a moment to yourself? Your overall health
and wellbeing depends in you paying attention to your original inbox. When
is the last time you took a few minutes to find clarity through meditation
or just checked in with how you are feeling mentally and physically? If the
idea of sitting quietly is too painful, engage in a mind body exercise for a
few minutes every day try something like tai chi or kung fu.
Give yourself permission once a day to be unresponsive and check in with
your most important inbox. Close your eyes wherever you are and focus on
that point between your eyebrows and about one inch up. See if you can take
just 5 minutes here. Open your eyes and you will be amazed at the quality
of your outbox. Develop a richer relationship with you. Find your source
of inspiration and be empowered!
Thanks!
Randi
