I have a 17 yr old daughter that is dating. I find myself always so worried about her safety. What tips and advice should I be giving her in this day and age to help to keep her safe in the dating scene?

I understand your concern and I‘ve been asked about this many times over the years. I have a few suggestions for you:

Go to my radio show hostpage www.crimeprevention101.com and listen to my show on 2/28/09 which is my interview with the folks from Just Yell Fire (www.justyellfire.org). JYF is a nationally-recognized self defense program aimed at tweens and teens from ages 11-17. I give lots of advice and safety tips on the show, including talking about their Dating Bill of Rights, which every teen should know about. You can get their free self defense DVD and the Dating Bill of Rights from their website. Sit down with your daughter, watch the DVD and let her express her concerns to you.

Another good resource is my show on 1/24/09: Kidpower, Teen Power, Full Power -- another great self defense program. Their website, www.kidpower.org, has lots of articles and tips on it about dating concerns too.

Lastly, take a look at my Date Rape Tips which is on my own website (http://www.susanbartelstone.com/2009/safetytips-success.html). I think that will help.

One more thought occurred to me after I posted: why not consider both you and your daughter taking a self defense class together. Good for both of you.
