One of my Professors at Law School, (whom I‘m calling Dr. Loverpool) used to begin the academic year making his ‘selections‘.
As UWI (University of the West Indies) had, (at the time) Three campuses; (Mona, Jamaica,(Medicine) Cave Hill, Barbados (Law) and Trinidad which dealt with Agriculture and Engineering)
everyone from the Territories, be it Bahamas in the North, Belize in the West, Antiqua in the East, or Guyana in the South, and all points in between...(English speaking Caribbean) attended one of these campuses.
Hence Loverpool was looking for a non-Bajan female who was not going home for Xmas break...(mid Dec to Jan...about 3 weeks).
As during Xmas his wife went to visit her mother in NY, he would send the helper and gardener home; leaving the day after his wife and returning two days before she did, and enjoy his selection.
Loverpool usually caused a breakup with his Selection at or around Dec 28 so that he could go stag to the UWI New Year‘s Eve Ball, and spend the remaining ‘gal less‘ days doing all the work he ought have done, from marking papers to handling the lesson plan in the few days remaining.
At the end of January he would find Miss Easter, and during the break, which usually continued to end of term, as most students would be ‘beating‘ their subjects, either keep her through the summer, (when wifey again paid a visit to her mother) or get a Miss Summer.
So every year, Loverpool had two or three or sometimes more affairs with students.
After twenty years of this, Wifey‘s mother died, and Wifey did not want him to come with her to the funeral. It led to a big fight, and wifey left without him.
He flew himself to NY and the chap in the front right who was carrying the coffin, in that fancy suit, happened to be the gardener.
For over twenty years wifey and gardener were having an affair.
On all the nights Loverpool worked late, during all the vacations his wife took (and he gave the gardener) the relationship was so strong and firm that everyone in NY believed the gardener was the wife‘s husband.

Two wrongs don‘t make a right but... serves him good for being so self-absorbed.
I‘m not sure which form of cheating is worse though, sleeping with someone else or loving someone else?

For the Prof is was that nasty smirky getting over thing, using the students having lots of affairs...feeling so pleased with himself..never for a second realised that his wife who he‘d left home ‘alone‘ was having her own life.
Her mother despised the Prof for his affairs, and adored the gardener chap.
I feel that the wife must have changed her affections fairly early, so the husband was just the supplier of cash.

But... why not just leave him then? Staying for the money and making a fool of yourself is totally wrong.

I met her after many years....about two years before her mother died. It was certainly not onerous for her. Hubby did everything ‘behind her back‘, and as he was so busy with this season‘s student he had no idea what was going on.
The wife was quite comfortable; hubby was always buying things for her and the house and giving her money, she was never upset or complaining, and the gardener was there every day as he lived in a little house on the property.
