When I was a Law Student in the early 70s one of my Instructors told me this;
"When a woman comes to me saying that her husband hit her or was unfaithful or any of a slurry of complaints, I always say; ‘this is not the first time.‘
"The woman may stare, may begin to deny; but I can see it in her eyes. It is not the first time."
When I began to practice law I would say the same thing; "It‘s not the first time."
And although you might get a denial, as we continue to talk the denial gets weaker and weaker.
Sometimes she‘ll say; "No, that doesn‘t count because it was ‘different‘", and supply an excuse.
Other times she‘ll leave in an imitation of denial and a few days later be back in; with the proof she never had before.
The reason I was so quick to adopt this mantra was because my best friend during my teen years married a chappie who was bad news, but she said, "Well, I know he‘s never been unfaithful to me..."
This guy hit on me when I was pregnant with my first child, this guy had one hell of an affair with his best friend‘s wife; and who knows who else.
Yet my best friend was dead certain he was never unfaithful to her.
Most of you believe that when you catch him this was the one and only time. That is crap. Unless you are a newly wed.
In one early case, the Wife had caught the man after 7 years of marriage, and when she began to explore, she learned that he had been having sex with just about any and every passing female. Beginning after six months of marriage.
For six and a half years this guy was all over the place, and his wife never caught him.
When you catch your husband, try to reflect on the past, try to remember when he came home late, when he wasn‘t where he said he would be, try to remember remarks women had made, or strange phone calls he explained away.
Go back a year or so, and you will suddenly appreciate that this was ‘not the first time‘ he was unfaithful, this is the first time you caught him.
