Violence & Sexual Assault Awareness Month Activities in Virginia
Each year Virginians recognize October at Domestic
Violence and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year many
domestic violence programs and sexual assault crisis centers
all over the state are planning activities in their communities.
Find out what‘s happening near you! Take the time to attend
an event in October, and show your commitment to creating a
world where all relationships between people are healthy, respectful,
and safe.
In the calendar below you will find the name
of localities. When you click on the locality it will take
you to descriptions of events, dates, and times in that
area. This calendar will be updated as events are submitted

Community Awareness and Education Sponsored by H.E.R. Letters will be
sent to business and faith leaders in Portsmouth and Chesapeake.
Training will be provided to STEP Council. For more information contact

- Annual Hampton Roads Youth Services Conference, Chesapeake Conference

- DV 101 presentation to two Women‘s Studies classes. Sponsored by
H.E.R. Tidewater Community College, 8am & 9:30am. For more

Suffolk
October 7th Abuse Knows No Politics Roast,
sponsored by The Genieve Shelter. 7pm-9:30pm Holiday Inn, Pruden Blvd.,
Suffolk, VA. A combination of Republicans, Democrats and Independents
will roast Attorney General Bob McDonnell to raise funds for
transitional housing for domestic violence victims in western
Tidewater. For more information contact Val Livingston at 757/925-4365.
Virtual Silent Wtiness
October 1st - 31st Second
Life Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its
residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown
explosively and today is inhabited by 308,449 people from around the
globe. In honor of DV/SA Awareness Month, Second Life resident Ziolla
Magpie (Real life name Samantha Preston) is holding a virtual Silent
Witness display. The display will consist of 50 red figures, one for
each state. A thought bubble will appear above each figure’s head
stating a stat pertaining to that state. The figures will be arranged
in a circle around a beam of light, shining upwards towards the sky;
symbolizing hope. The beam of light is also in honor of the victims who
have lost their lives due to DV/SA. To see the display, go to www.secondlife.com
and create an account. It is completely free. Download the software and
log in. Send an instant message to Ziolla Magpie or search for Silent

Regional DV Candlelight Vigil, Sponsored by: Tidewater Regional DV Task
Force, 6:00pm - 8:00pm, Mt. Trashmore, Virginia Beach. For more

Winchester
October 10th - 23rd Domestic
Violence Volunteer Training, sponsored by The Shelter for Abused Women.
Times vary. Volunteers are trained to provide staff and client support
and assist with community events and fundraisers. For more information

October 11th Health
Cares About Domestic Violence Day, sponsored by The Shelter for Abused
Women. All day event. Shelter staff will be distributing brocures,
posters and assessment tools to local medical offices. For more

October 14th 14th Annual Candlelight Vigil
sponored by The Shelter for Abused Women. 7pm Joint Judical Center,
Winchester. Vigil to celebrate survivors of sexual and domestic
violence featuring local clothesline project and silent witness
display. For information contact Wendy Wiley at 540/667-6160.
Entire Month of October
Healthy Relationships Church Project sponsored by The Council Against
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Winchester, VA. Churches are
invited to become Healthy Relationship Churches. Participating churches
recieve start-up kits including prevention oriented curriculum,
give-aways and banners! For more information contact Mary Daniel at

Yeah right...they‘ll take my money and NOT help like when I needed them a month ago. Virginia doesn‘t give a damn about women. They just want to fund raise so they can take more of our money and not help us when we need it.
