Ok, this has absolutely nothing to do with romantic relationships, but you all are the closest friends/sounding board I‘ve got so I‘ve got a question for you PTAers out there. We held elections last night and things got pretty ugly. At one point two mothers got into a slanging match about who was "busier" stay at home moms or working (outside the home) moms. It escalated so fast that before anyone could intervene, one of the mothers actually got up and WALKED OUT. I sat there like a fish opening and closing my mouth, unable to get two words out I was so flabbergasted at this behavior. I kept wanting to stand up and shout "WTF? Are we still in high school and someone forgot to send me the memo???" Since I am relatively new to PTA, I was just wondering...is this normal behavior or did I wander into Oz without my ruby slippers????

Unfortunately, it‘s "normal." Not being particularly young, I‘ve had all too much time to observe what I consider to be the increaswing loss of civility in our society. Good manners and consideration seem to be fast-disappearing traits and it starts with the parents who don‘t teach them to their children and insist on decent deportment.
Tempers seem to be increasingly short, entitlement attitudes are at an all-time high and personal responsibility is becoming a somewhat rare commodity. Think road rage, bad neighbors, crime, lack of service in commercial establishments, etc.
PTA is just a microcosm of society as a whole and a bunch of big frogs in small ponds who insist on being right, "special" and recognized.

2mom,
we all want our kids to grow up lol, but sadly some parents never do. Its a fact of life and one we dont even need to buy in to if we can help it.
Just think about your participation in last nights events. Are you proud because you didnt buy in to the BS, you should be.
All seriousness aside, that made me smile, your discription of a goldfish, lol
Hang in there, sounds like your PTA meetings need more "goldfish" than high school loonies. How you are and what you are doing WILL COUNT massively in the long run given events you describe.

It‘s sad that you had to witness that. I have never, ever seen an in person argument at a PTO meeting. There‘s one woman who is the secretary or something, who is in charge of emailing the budget meeting minutes to all members who will give her opinion, and it‘s usually pretty nasty-I have told her to keep her opinion to herself-nobody cares to read it like it‘s Gospel. Elections don‘t really get tense around here-we all have a common goal, and most of the board members, even the ones running against each other, are friends. I attend benefit functions all the time (most recently a fashion show, with a chinese auction) and opening today is the annual carnival at the beach-we all take turns working it, and attending it, and nobody gets nasty or bitchy.
Here, cat-fights are NOT the norm.
