Californians Uniting to End Domestic Violence |
Start:
10/11/2006 11:00am |
End:
10/11/2006 5:00pm |
| Conference |
| October
is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and across the Country,
domestic violence advocates are joining with allied community members
to organize activities of remembrance and awareness. DVAM is a time for
collective action, to celebrate survivors in this movement, raise
public awareness of domestic violence, and remember the millions of
lives lost, as a result of abuse. In recognition of DVAM, California
Secretary of State Bruce McPherson and The Safe at Home Program are
teaming up with local and statewide domestic violence organizations and
other state agencies to host a Statewide Day of Awareness –Californians
Uniting to End Domestic Violence on October 11, 2006 from 11:00 am –
5:00 pm. The first event will take place in Sacramento, California on
the West Steps of the State Capitol from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm. This event
will include speakers, live entertainment, refreshments, and domestic
violence information booths. If you are not able to attend the
Sacramento event, we encourage you to connect with your Domestic
Violence Coordinating Council and/or other multidisciplinary entity in
your county to plan your own event for Domestic Violence Awareness
Month. This event is a collaborative effort sponsored by over 20
organizations that include domestic violence programs, advocacy groups,
state agencies and public / private partners. The second event is a
domestic violence awareness forum “Building a Safer California”, hosted
by Secretary of State Bruce McPherson and the California Confidential
Mail Forwarding Program “Safe at Home”. The Forum will be held
immediately following the event at the State Capitol at 2:00 pm in the
Secretary of State’s Office Auditorium, 1500 11th Street, Sacramento,
CA 95814. This forum is an opportunity for organizations and
stakeholders in the fight against domestic violence to receive the
latest information on state/ local programs and the resources they
provide to assist victims of domestic violence in starting new lives
free from abuse and fear. Domestic violence is one our nation’s biggest
problems, yet many instances of abuse go unreported while victims
suffer in silence. Please join us for this meaningful event. This is an
opportunity for you to be a part of an important campaign to end
domestic violence and its far-reaching effects. If you would like more
information or ideas on how your organization/agency can become
involved, please contact Safe at Home at (toll free) 877-322-5227.

Domestic Violence Awareness month is almost over and I found it a little disappointing. Very little publicity, unless you knew of the events personally the television, radio stations or the newspapers even mentioned anything about the events. Everyday I heard about breat cancer awareness month, yes this an important event but women are beaten and abused twenty four hours a day this is just as important. We need to get busy and making people more aware.
