According to Amnesty International, Native American women are 2.5 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than women of other ethnic groups and 86% of those assaults are by non-Indian men. Due to legal jurisdictional conflicts regarding crimes committed on reservations, lax response by law enforcement and lack of services, Indian women can pretty much be raped with impunity. This week, I‘ll be speaking with Charon Asetoyer, of the Native American Women‘s Health Education Resource Center, about what can be done to change this situation.
Then, I talk with Mary Quinn, from the Avon Foundation for Women. Everyone knows about Avon‘s sponsorship of breast cancer research. Most are not as familiar with their efforts on behalf of domestic violence and women‘s and girls empowerment. Yet, the Avon Foundation has raised and awarded more than $750 million to improve the lives of women. Thought you should know about some of their programs!
We’ll also try to catch a criminal with Det. Robert Sarrantonio from the Bluegrass Crime Stoppers group in Lexington, KY.
