Learn to hold yourself to a higher standard. Turn up the intensity of your life.
Last night I was observing a class being taught at my Kung Fu School. I was in the back and could see the whole thing as a reflection in the mirror. The students could not see me watching them.
Currently there are many books out discussing the benefits of deliberate practice as opposed to the mindlessly moving.
At first I saw some sloppy stances and felt frustrated. I continued to watch until I couldn‘t take it anymore. Generally, I prefer positive motivation to negative, but the lack of personal pride pushed me to my edge.
Move mindfully I said. You are not cheating me, but cheating yourself. The trouble is students learn to anticipate and pace themselves so they don‘t fail. Not giving it your all is failing. I have more respect for those who find their edge and shake and fall down then for those who make it to the end without breaking a sweat.
Kung Fu or any discipline like tai chi make for a great skillful means to practice deliberately. These skills transfer over into your whole life. When you get dressed, do it with intention. When you schedule dates or meetings, have a clear intention. When you exercise have a clear intention. Don‘t wait for someone to tell you. Learn to hold yourself accountable everyday.
