Listening to a book on CD has really drawn my attention to the need for compassion in everyday life. So often we move through life mindlessly and see people in the position they are holding at that moment.
For a moment, practice removing titles like Mom, daughter, Employee, Employer, Cashier, etc. Stop looking at people filling their roles and start looking at them as small children with the same hopes, dreams and fear as you. Only when you get to that place can really make a deep connection.
Today, I was taking a hot yoga class. Behind me was a new guy. He had the tough guy persona going. I knew he would soon be broken down by the heat. Without a towel, I watched him sweating and slipping. I decided to toss mine back and smile. His whole persona changed and I could see he was deeply grateful even if he couldn‘t express it.
The simple act was so rewarding that I found myself floating through class. When I later learned he was a Professional Hockey player, it further affirmed the idea that money doesn‘t buy everything.
Practicing Random Acts of Compassion is the most powerful gift you can give yourself! How have you shared your compassion?

I smile at everyone, no matter what my day is like.
I hold doors for everyone; men, women, children alike.
I have picked up old ladies walking down the street and drove them to their destination.
I will usually, but not always, stop and offer assistance to a stranded motorist.
I will occasionally pay the bridge toll for whomever is behind me in line.
I have, do and will always chase a stray dog and return it to its home.

Those are lovely acts of intentional compassion. I do have to warn against taking stranded motorists with you. It is unfortunate in this day and age, we have to be mindful. Keep making the world a better place!
