Dr. Womansaver,
I am concerned for a friend who has been taking this medication for a long period and also abusing alcohol. This is not prescribed to him.
Will there be long term damage?
We are starting to plan a intervention but wonder if he will need to go into detox first. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

Hi Kitty Kitty. Yes there can be serious long term effects of morphine abuse and alcohol abuse. The first is addiction and tolerance (the need for a higher and higher dose to achieve the same effect). Have the intervention, but also provide your friend options to a detox/rehab program as doing it alone, will not only fail (most likely), but can be very dangerous. I can help you with some resources if you wish. Good luck and let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for the info and great links.
We are sending him to rehab directly from the intervention. Do we need to send him to a detox first?
We are very scared he won‘t go...
