Hi,
I‘ve been married for more than seven years, but my
husband and I have been together for almost eleven years now.
This year, after my last gynecological exam, my
doctor called me to let me know I was positive for HPV. He said maybe next year,
we can try the vaccine for HPV. I don‘t really know if that would help me in any
way, since I already have it. Also, I was reading that having HPV
eventually increases your chances of getting cervical cancer. Now, the next
question would be, how can I have HPV if I am involved in what I assume to be a
monogamous relationship?
Could I have been all these years with him and
after ten years get HPV from him, or by me, having this diagnosis now,
necessarily means he has been involved in a extramarital relationship
for the last past year and got it from somebody else? Could you get HPV in
any other way other than through intercourse?
Please help me. Your answer would be extremely
important for me. Thanks so much.
Hi,
It is possible to contract HPV, and have it lie dormant for months to
years. In addition, men who don‘t get the type of HPV which
causes warts are usually asymptomatic, so they won‘t know they have
it. Regardless of whether the virus is dormant, or produces an
asymptomatic state, it can still be passed on by sexual contact.
Thus it is nearly impossible to determine who you got it from or who he got it from and when.
The important thing though, is early detection and follow up with your
doctor to treat or prevent any further changes to the cervix which may
progress to cervical cancer. You may also want to talk to your
partner about getting tested for HPV, and discuss future issues about
sex, and protection.
