Dear Dr.
I wanted some info on effective methods to perminently remov hair. I have tried laser hair removal a long time ago but I got bad side effects as my skin got burnt which may because of my black skin. My skin has healed from that incident. I know that every year these things get improved and different types of lasers are created and I wanted to know which laser treatment is best for African american skin. So far I have been doing waxing and tweezing and I keep getting ingrown hairs and it grows back too fast and thicker..The area that bothers me most is on my face chin, sideburns. This issue is realy starting to bother me as I am afraid to get too close to my mate because he might notice hair in a place it should not be, also when I am around other people I am constantly wondering if they notice my facial hair.
I know electrolysis is another option but I honestly don‘t know much about it, maybe you can help me with that also.
Any info would be appreciated because this has me stressed.!

Hi Goodbye,
If a woman has thick or dark
hair growth on her face, I would first be concerned about medical
problems like PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) or hormonal imbalances
with Testosterone. I would recommend talking to your doctor about that
first, because if you do have one of these, treating the medical
problem, will also treat the facial hair.
If the medical causes are ruled out, then the excess hair growth is
probably due to genetics. Some women just have more hair than others.
I‘m sure you are aware of all the different ways you can remove hair:
shaving, tweezing, waxing and creams. These are just temporary
solutions though.
There is a prescription medication called Vaniqa (eflornithine), which you can ask your doctor about. From what I have seen , it is quite effective in preventing hair growth in many women.
The
procedures that are out there are laser hair removal and electrolysis.
Laser uses heat and electrolysis is a similar procedure but uses a
small electric current to kill the hair root under the skin. Both can
cause some mild pain/discomfort and sometimes leave scars or marks on
your skin. Laser tends to work the best on light skin with dark hair,
so I suggest women NOT tan before they go in for their laser sessions.
You may also need a few sessions to get the results you desire, and
this can be very time consuming and costly as well.

I hope you find a solution that‘s right for you. Dr.WS
