Hi Doc :)
I went to see my doc (not something I‘m keen on - I have a fobia with hospitals and doctors, so I tend not to go unless I‘m either in utter pain or I have to go) I have been suffering from pretty bad moodswings the last maybe 1 year - the closer I get to the time of my period the crankier/ irritable I become, which is really not me. I have a very hard time during the about 4-6 days to control my temper and that just don‘t work with 3 kids around.
My doc suggest a "mild" anti depressent but I really don‘t want to be medicated. I have been on those before for post partum and I felt more like a zombie then a human being.
I read about soy and soy products and the effect they can have on people and same with calsium & vitamin E ( the latter I‘m already taking) I wanted to hear you input on it.
My own doc almost rolled his eyes when I mentioned soy, so I‘m pretty certain that he thinks it‘s a gimmick.
Info: I‘m 38 have 3 kids 7,5,3 - I had a bonedensity scan which came back with a grat score 980, I think it was, so I know I‘m not doing to bad on the calsium.
Thanks in advance,
TM

Hi TM. I can imagine your doctor‘s half eye roll when you mentioned soy for your hormonal problems. Your doctor may not be too keen on recommending soy products for post menopausal symptoms because the studies so far show no benefit from soy for certain symptoms like hot flashes, etc. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hot-flashes/HQ01409 And it‘s not likely that soy would have any effect on mood changes either. Vitamin E may have a minimum benefit. However everyone is different, and some women actually swear by natural treatment. If you want to try incorporating soy in your diet, you may as long as you have it in moderation while keeping a balanced diet. I can‘t promise it will work for you, but it can‘t hurt. As for any vitamins or supplements, make sure you clear it with your doctor first. For the mood swings though, your best bet may just be the mild antidepressant your doctor suggested. For soy products in general, I suggest you look into tempeh, miso, and natto, (forms of fermented soy) which are different from tofu (non-fermented soy). You may like the taste of these better. Compared to tofu, tempeh is higher in fiber. Miso is high in calcium. And natto is gooey and has a funny taste. :) Try experimenting till you find something you like. Soybeans and soynuts also make great snacks. In general, try buying fresh tofu if possible instead of the types you buy in the boxes or packages. I get mine from the Asian supermarket or the farmer‘s market... not a must, but you‘ll avoid the extra additives and preservatives. I hope this helps. Dr.WS

Yes, thank you:)
I‘m still not too keen on anti-depressants. Rather have mood swings then be a zombie.
