Hi!
I am currently working nights from 23-7 every other week, and have difficulty getting my sleeping patterns in order.
When I get home at 8 in the morning I cant sleep even though I am tired.
I try to wind down, take a hot shower, light some candles and put on a comfortable PJ. But when I get into bed-I almost get into some sort of "Ok, I HAVE to get some sleep-stress" and basically lay there for hours wide awake.
I dont get anything out of the day-too tired to do anything, but not tired enough to go to sleep.
What do I do? I have decided NOT to go back EVER to the sleeping pills/alcohol binges to fix my insomnia.
Please help.
Yasmina

Hi Yasmina.
I‘m sorry you‘re having trouble sleeping. The work schedule you described seems like somewhat of a challenge to get used to because it‘s every other week. I know it can be a bit strange coming home tired from work when the sun is coming up and everyone is getting ready to start their day while you are winding down from your long night. I definitely don‘t suggest alcohol as a sleep aid, and meds ONLY as a last resort. Here are some of my suggestions in this thread: I need to sleep ......please help I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any further help. -DrWS

I worked nights 11-7 for a whole year and couldn‘t get a good sleep pattern at first.
What I started to do was to go home put my running shoes on ( yeah I was a running nut back then) and run 2-6 miles then eat breakfast and figure out what needed to be done that day like paying bills, dropping of laundry/dry cleaning, shopping. Then I would get it out of the way as soon as I had gotten home from the run and taken a quick shower. I was tired but I used to get energy from the workout of the run. Enough for me to get a few hours worth of energy. Around 2-3 pm I would climb in bed with a good book and if I was lucky I got to read 1/2 a page. I‘d be back up around 9.30 pm again.
On rainy days I spend about 1 1/2 hour in the gym instead of running. Wish I had the time for that these days lol.
It takes a while to get the rythme right Yas.
But if you go to bed and can‘t fall asleep with in 30 min. get out and do something small ( dishes, pay bills) stay away from the computer and the tv :)
