How long after sex do I need to wait to have an HIV test?
I had a test already about 3 months ago and then slipped and had unprotected sex again. Should I just do it once a year. Not that I am planning on slipping again...but just in case?

Hi sassiegirl,
I hope you don‘t ever "slip" again! It could be a very costly mistake and it‘s just not worth it putting your health and your life at risk. Please use protection such as a latex condom in the future.
Get tested as soon as possible. Your doctor will also want to test for other sexually transmitted infections and treat you and your partner if necessary.
As for HIV, it takes about 3-4 weeks before the test may show anything, sometimes longer- upto 3-6 months. Your doctor may suggest multiple tests to confirm your HIV status.
Again, please practice safe sex in the future, and please see the below information on HIV and HIV testing:
For information on where to find an HIV testing site, visit the National HIV Testing Resources Web site at http://www.hivtest.org or call CDC-INFO 24 Hours/Day at1-800-CDC-INFO (232-4636), 1-888-232-6348 (TTY), in English, en Español. If you would like more information or have personal concerns, call CDC-INFO 24 Hours/Day at1-800-CDC-INFO (232-4636), 1-888-232-6348 (TTY), in English, en Español.
