Hi tltscorpio.

The first thing to do would be to find out for sure why you lack energy or feel sleepy.  There is a long list of reasons ranging from simply not getting enough sleep, high stress in life, or not eating enough/right types of foods during the day, to more serious causes like depression, hypothyroidism or anemia.  Fatigue can also be caused by other diseases, or sometimes certain medications.  These are just a few of the common causes.  If you are concerned about this issue, I recommend you see your doctor for a complete physical to find out the cause.  If your doctor is unsure, ask to be reffered to a specialist like an endocrinologist or hematologist.  The treatment is based on cause, so once a specific cause is identified, it will be easier to treat.

There are many different types of anemia.  Iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia, especially in women with heavy periods, because when you lose blood you lose iron.  If you are concerned about this talk to your gynecologist.

For now I can suggest the following
:

-Get enough sleep (at least 6-8 hours a night, and go to sleep and wake the same time daily)

-Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet.  Try to eat more frequent smaller meals throughout the day rather than 1 or 2 large meals.

-Take a multivitamin daily.  Ask your doctor about which one is right for you.

-Get at least a half hour of exercise a day if you can.  Go for a walk or do something you enjoy.

-Decrease stress in your life.  If you have a demanding schedule try to get family members or friends to help you with some of your tasks.

-Take time out for yourself.  Try relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, ti-chi, or yoga.

-If you are a smoker, quit smoking.  And avoid alcohol, and drugs such as sleep-aids.  But don‘t alter the doses of your current medications without consulting your doctor first!

-If you are a coffee/tea drinker, you can safely have up to 3 cups/day, but if you aren‘t don‘t start!  Caffeine doesn‘t always help with fatigue, and the withdrawal effects will worsen the condition once you stop.

-There are certain herbal supplements on the market which claim to increase energy, but the effects vary from person to person.  Make sure you talk to your doctor if you are thinking of starting any such herbal remedy because it may interact with your medications.

Good luck.
Dr. WS
