Hi Dr Womansaver

I am taking the contraceptive pill Loestrin 20.  My current dosage is as follows:-

Take for six weeks and have a weeks break for a period then continue for another six weeks and so on.

However, is it possible for me to delay my next period for a week by continuing the dose to the seventh week and then having a break for my period?  Is it safe to do this?

Thank you.

Hi LadyJayne,

Loestrin 21 is a monophasic pill (every pill contains the same amount of hormones) and is usually taken for 21 days with a break of 7 days.  Monophasic pills are sometimes used to delay periods safely for 6-12 weeks.  If one is on an extended schedule (with their doctor‘s approval of course), it shouldn‘t be a problem to delay the period by a week by taking one more week of active pills.  However you should NEVER make any alterations to your dosages without consulting your doctor/health care provider first.  To find out if this option is appropriate for you, ask your doctor and get his/her approval before making any decisions about changing your dose.  Thanks.

Is lowestrin similar to othro cyclen lo? Well except for the amount of time it‘s taken, is lowesrtin as low as othro lo? A friend of mine became pregnant twice on othro lo and she didn‘t skip pills or anything. Her doctor told her that it probably just wasn‘t strong enough for her and that othro lo is mosty used to alieve cramps.

What other pills are good? I take the shot but I want to switch to the pill.

Hi.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo and Loestrin are similar because they are both combination pills (both contain a form of estrogen and progesterone).  However they are different because Loestrin is a monophasic pill (contains the same amount of hormones in each active pill), whereas Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo is a triphasic pill (contains active pills with three different doses of hormones changing every week in the first three weeks).

There is no "good" or "bad" pill.  It really depends on you and what you are looking for.  After getting a pelvic exam your doctor or health care provider can make some suggestions based on why you want to start taking the pill.  For example you may want to take the pill just for contraception, to regulate periods or even to delay your periods.

Talk to your doctor and discuss your concerns about starting the pill.

Alesse is a monophasic combination pill, like Loestrin.

Here is some more information on Alesse:

Hi there.

I have just started taking Loestrin 20. I‘m hoping this pill will work for me. I have been on microgynon, eugynon 30 and femodette in the past. I‘ve been put on this to prevent me from gaining weight, which previous pills have done, and also to hopefully keep a healthy sex drive, as again previous pills completely changed that. I was wondering though, my doctor has given me 4 packets to last 3 months, she has said to take the full 21 and then one more from the ‘spare‘ packet, and then have just a 6 day break. I did ask her at the time I think but this was a few weeks ago, and I was wondering what the reason for this could be? And also will the pill be as effective as if I did the standard 21/7?

Thank you.
