Dating Someone With Kids

Children... They can be difficult to understand if you don't have any of your own. These beings are not just small versions of adults. They are in fact, unique beings with thoughts, feelings and emotions of their own and they can be affected in many ways when a parent is dating. What do you need to know if you're planning to date someone with kids?

If You Also Have Kids
If you have children yourself and you're looking to date a man with kids, it can be a good combination. Two single parents coming together in love and companionship can be wonderful. However, I think the Brady Bunch taught us all that it's not always smooth-sailing.

Dating someone with kids
If you both have kids, you must consider their feelings and their needs while dating. How involved with the children be in your dating lives? Will the children meet or is it possible they already know one another (go to the same schools, etc)? Will you do things together with both families? How do your kids feel about the dating?

It's very important to consider the needs of the children when dating someone with kids and also to be sure that you share common goals in regards to parenting issues if you are considering a serious relationship.

If You Do Not Have Kids
If you don't have any kids of your own, it may be difficult at times if you are dating someone with kids. You will not have many of the same priorities and opinions as the man you are dating. However, this is not to say it won't work. While many relationship experts advise against dating someone with children, we know that single dads need lovin', too.

So what are the rules for dating a man with children? First, it's true what they say: when you date a father, you're dating his kids, too. His children should be a top priority in his life (if he's any kind of man or dad) and you need to not only understand this, but respect it. Don’t feel bad or take it personally if the needs of his children sometimes interfere with your plans.

Next, be upfront about the ground rules early in the relationship. Will you meet the children? When and how? Will you spend time with them all together? What are the rules regarding sleeping over? Talk with your man and be open about everything in the beginning.

It's important when dating someone with kids to be sure you are really committed before becoming a part of their lives as well. It can be devastating to a child if you are suddenly removed from their lives due to a breakup. Most of us can agree we don't want that on our conscience.

Remember that anytime you date someone with children, it is a delicate matter, especially if you have actually met the children. Don't try to be a mom to the child; they will likely resent you for it. Don't try to tell your man how to be a dad (unless he asks for your advice), he will likely resent you for it. Don't go into these types of relationships lightly and if you're not looking for something serious, it is best to avoid the dads altogether.
